The Pause Button

I haven't had much time to actually "write" on my blog lately... mostly I've just been posting pictures and quick summaries of what we've been up to.  But I'd really like to record more of what's going on in my head these days.  Not really because I think it's all that interesting to anyone else, but I do want to remember what this time in my life was like.

I'd love to hit the "pause" button right about now.  All 4 kids are at such a sweet age!

Zoey and Lyla are the happiest little babies, so cute and chubby and smiling all the time!  You know how good it feels when someone puts their hands on your face?  Well Zoey and Lyla do this to us all the time... it makes you feel so loved!

Zoey likes to snuggle onto your shoulder and suck her thumb when you go to put her down for a nap.  She can be very emotional when it comes to food!  It won't be long before she starts crawling!  Lyla giggles at just about anyone that walks by and she's into eating too!  Both of them will eat anything on a spoon... thank goodness they're not picky at all!  It seemed to me that a few months ago they were "fussy" babies.  But now suddenly they are so "easy!"  How did I get so lucky to have two such wonderful little girls??  All you have to do is turn out their lights, put them in their cribs and they will fall right to sleep for 2 quality naps a day and 12+ hours at night!  Unfortunately I think my days breastfeeding them are numbered.  They are already taking a bottle of formula for one of their feedings and it won't be long until the rest of them are replaced too.  I am super sad about the whole thing... I'm just not ready to give it up yet.  I had every intention of nursing them for a full year like I did with Chase and Siena.  It's been somewhat of a struggle for me since the beginning because of the shear amount of calories that are required to make enough milk for twins.  I really do believe in our body's ability to provide milk for our babies, even 2 or 3 at a time, and I'm so happy that I've been able to nurse them exclusively for 7 months.  But unfortunately (some people would say fortunately!) my body is a calorie-burning machine!  My metabolism is out of control and I just can't seem to eat enough to keep up with all of the energy that I need to take care of everyone and make enough milk.  I held off on running for about 6 months and now I'm only going once a week for about 3 miles... but even that is maybe burning too many calories!  I don't know.  But I've made peace with it.  I know that I'm stressing over nothing.  I'm just missing that closeness with them already!  It breaks my heart to have them both laying on the floor in their boppies drinking their bottles instead of being in my arms.

Siena is pretty much the most beautiful little thing I've ever seen.  Seriously.  I could just look at her all day long!

I'm delighted to say though, that she's just as smart as she is pretty!  She keeps surprising me with how much she knows and how fast she can learn new things.  She loves playing board games with us and with her big brother and you wouldn't believe how good she is at memory games!  She beats me at "Handy Manny Memory Game" all the time (although Eric says that's not too hard to do)!  I keep thinking I want to get some video of her playing that game because she is just so good at it!  And then just the other night we were asking her to count to 10... well wouldn't you know, she counted to 10 and kept right on going to 25!!!  She's starting to recognize letters everywhere and she is proud to spell her name for you if you ask.  Siena loves to make up little songs all the time.  I'll catch her singing about her dinner: "oh Broccoli, oh Broccoli!"  :)  I just love that little girl!

Chase continues to amaze us with his smarts too!  All day long it's: "Mommy, 14+5=9, right?" or "You should make 6 pieces of toast because there's 3 of us and we each want 2!"  It's ridiculous some of the stuff he comes up with.  We knew he could count by 2's, 5's, and 10's, but one day we caught him counting by 30's!  He's quickly learning to read too.  At school they've been sending him home with 3 sight word flashcards each week and he's got all of those memorized.  But he's also starting to recognize other words and he's getting good at sounding things out.  You can tell he's so excited about it!  Chase still loves building things: Legos, Trio blocks, train tracks, Constructs, and Mega blocks.  He loves to watch sports on tv, just like his daddy.  Baseball, football, soccer, it doesn't matter!  He likes to give us score updates and the other day I saw him opening our computer "to check the scores, Mommy!"  He has a sweet side too... always giving hugs and being my "helper!"

I feel like I look at them individually at least 100 times a day and think, "I love you more than anything in the whole world!"  If you're a mom of more than one, you know what I mean.  Somehow the impossible becomes possible: You can say, "I love you with all my heart" to each child and really mean it.  It reminds me of that book, "The Shack" (great read, by the way!) when the character of God says over and over about so many different people: "I'm especially fond of you!"
