Makes you think...
This past Sunday I read this article in the St. Pete Times newspaper and I can't stop thinking about it. Given the choice between raising a child who excels in school and graduates with a 4 year degree, and one who has enough compassion and ambition to make a difference in the world, which would you choose? Of course, both would be nice... but which one should I make a priority? This kid (well, he's about our age now) was by all accounts not so good at school. In fact, he didn't make it through community college and had no career aspirations. At first glance, and according to society's standards, he was a failure. But he's done more to change the world in the past 6 six years than I may do in my whole life. Chase and Siena have parents who both loved school and want them to "succeed"... but what does that mean? Naturally, I want them to have both an education and compassion; I just hope I can remember which one is more important.
