Wanted: A few good books!

As I'm starting to pack for our big trip to Europe, I need to figure out which books to take along with me! We'll have lots of plane and train rides so I need some interesting reading material. Anyone have some suggestions for can't-put-it-down-type of books? Most recently I've enjoyed Kite Runner, Water for Elephants, a few Alexander McCall Smith books, and I love Philippa Gregory. I typically enjoy historical fiction, but I also like modern books if they're set in another country, or just out of the ordinary. I don't particularly enjoy books about murder, divorce, or anything gloomy! So, please send in your suggestions... I need lots!

I just finished 3 weeks with my brother by Nicholas Sparks. It's an account of a trip he took with his brother, and the story of their childhood. Pretty good read.

I just read Belong to Me, by Marisa de los Santos. It was fantastic - I laughed and I cried. I definitely recommend you read it!

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult is good...very sad, but still good.

Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote is very interesting. It's non-fiction, about a guy who adopts a lost dog, and what he learns from the experience.
